I've been training at Gracie Barra Vancouver for over two years, and I'm convinced it's the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offering in the Vancouver area. I highly recommend Gracie Barra Vancouver for getting into shape, learning to defend yourself, meeting new people and general self-improvement.

I would like to point out that this is a very solid school. I came from OAMA.CA out east and didn' think I would find another school as good. The basic class is pretty much old school Gracie Jiu Jitsu, tried and tested, as it should be. No flash, or low percent moves, grabbed from the internet to fool new students. Tim actually teaches the basic classes and is very good with the details. Logan has a very good way of teaching, his memory retention on intermediate to advanced moves is about as good as you can get, he runs the classes as they should be. Rodrigo is a freak, you want to learn advanced moves take one of his classes. His English is getting better every time he is here. Very technical, and will when required have a very punishing warm up before technique class. There are also fitness experts there, that run kettle classes and some cross training, kinda like the infamous 300 workout. Can't go wrong really if you need progress.

Excellent training, excellent people -- the ultimate combination for a great academy.
I begin my review by noting that I am an academic employed at a local university. I have eyesight, and certain serious issues involved with my sight.
I note these points only to emphasise that I am hardly your typical BJJ guy . And that, therefore, if I can do it . . . anybody can.
But the place you train is the essential factor in how far one can go. GB Vancouver has been utterly exemplary in guiding my development at every step of the way. Firm but friendly, challenging but understanding--Prof Tim Shears and his crew of excellent coaches bring excellent teaching and techniques to the mats every time. This is a serious BJJ school, with an excellent pedigree--but they also maintain the core elements of what a martial art should possess: the glory of tradition and the nobility of mutual respect. In short, this is a very cool place to train, with very cool people. I would personally acknowledge and recommend, in the highest terms, the valuable skills and lessons--and self-knowledge--that I have gained through GB Vancouver.
